Fat transfer is a surgical procedure which involves taking fat from one area of your body (donor fat) and moving it to another area. Fat can be used to fill contour depressions or provide additional volume to enhance particular areas of the body such as the face or buttocks. The fat is usually taken from the abdomen or thighs. It is then carefully prepared and placed into the desired areas using a micrografting technique.
Fat grafting offers many of the same benefits as synthetic wrinkle fillers such as Juvederm or Radiesse; however, there are some important differences. Fat usually lasts longer than the synthetic fillers, but fat transfer also requires a longer recovery period since liposuction is involved. Fat is considered more versatile since the amount of fat capable of being transferred is far greater than the fillers. The fat transfer procedure is meticulous and technically demanding, and although some fat may survive permanently, touch-ups may be needed to obtain longer lasting results.
