Understanding Injectables

Understanding InjectablesThere is a wide variety of injectables available in today’s market. They are composed of specific ingredients designed to treat certain areas of the face. It can be confusing when trying to decide which injectable is best for you. It is important to understand what makes up a filler and its effects before you choose one for your treatment. The most common injectables in today’s market are BOTOX® Cosmetic, JUVÉDERM®, and RADIESSE®.

BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a solution of botulinum toxin. In its natural state, botulinum toxin is poisonous, but as an injectable, it is merely a neurotransmitter inhibitor. When injected, BOTOX® Cosmetic prevents the muscles from receiving signals from the brain to contract. This allows the muscles to relax, reducing the visible signs of wrinkles. BOTOX® Cosmetic prevents muscle movement; it does not increase the volume or plump the skin. The effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic last approximately four months.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is ideal for improving:

  • Lines at the corners of the eyes (“crow’s feet”)
  • Lines between the brows (“frown lines”)
  • Lines across the forehead

JUVÉDERM® ULTRA and ULTRA PLUS

JUVÉDERM® ULTRA and ULTRA PLUS are FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a natural compound that works within the skin to stimulate cellular turnover and collagen production, and it is used to add volume and fullness to the skin. The effects of JUVÉDERM® ULTRA and ULTRA PLUS can last up to a year and a half.

JUVÉDERM® ULTRA and ULTRA PLUS are ideal for improving:

  • Folds in the lower half of the face
  • Nasolabial folds
  • “Circles” beneath the eyes
  • Lip fullness and definition (lip augmentation without the need for permanent implants)

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC is better defined as a “volumizer” rather than a filler, and it can produce a “lifting” effect. This product is injected primarily in the upper cheek area to provide fullness and rejuvenate the midface area. The effects of JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC can last up to two years.

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC is ideal for improving:

  • Loss of cheek projection associated with aging
  • Loss of midface contour and definition

RADIESSE®

RADIESSE® is an FDA-approved dermal filler composed of the naturally occurring protein calcium hydroxylapatite. This protein stimulates the production of collagen in the skin, which increases volume and adds fullness. The effects of RADIESSE® can last up to two years.

RADIESSE® is ideal for improving:

  • Deep nasolabial folds near the nose
  • Folds in the lower face

All injectables are non-surgical treatments and do not require downtime after the procedure. Repeat treatments will be necessary to maintain ideal results. During your consultation, you and Dr. Peters can discuss your aesthetic goals to determine which filler will work best for you.

What’s the skinny on fat transfer?

Fat Transfer for Contour Augmentation and Rejuvenation

Just get rid of fat, right? Well, not so fast…taking fat from one area of the body and then placing it into another area has become increasingly more common in recent years. It is known as a fat transfer or fat augmentation.  I recently attended the International Fat Grafting Forum in New Orleans.  It was opportunity to review present fat transfer techniques and innovative ideas using fat.  The most common use of fat transfer is for buttock augmentation.  But I believe the most powerful use of fat transfer is in combination with other procedures.  A face lift alone simply cannot restore youthful facial volumes.  A fat transfer allows specific areas to be filled in order to balance the surgical result.  For patients having breast lifts or augmentations, fat transfer will provide the ability to enhance the breast contours or even correct anatomical issues not addressed by surgery. Fat transfer is certainly an exciting frontier for plastic surgeons; and I look forward to providing safe and reliable options for patients interested in these procedures.

Why use fat?

  • Versatility: It can be placed just about anywhere in the body. When it is placed in various areas of the face, for example, a more youthful appearance can be achieved. You can even get a more shapely butt by placing fat over the gluteal muscles to enhance its contour.
  • 2-for-1: As the surgeon removes the fat for transfer, the contour can be improved in that area. At least those “saddle bags” can be good for something!
  • Lasting results: Fat has the capability of producing natural and potentially permanent results.

So it looks like fat is here to stay. Entertainment stars like Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, and Nikki Minaj have highlighted their body contours and are probably responsible for the increase in the number of women seeking butt augmentations using fat transfer. Recently released surgical statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons showed a 200% increase between 2013 and 2014 in the number of patients having augmentation of the buttocks using fat transfer. More importantly, recent advancements and refined techniques in the fat transfer procedure have increased the number of candidates for this procedure.

Tips for Consultation Confidence

consult

Deciding to have plastic surgery can be a nerve-wracking process.  Many people experience concern over choosing the right Doctor, which procedure to receive and managing the time off of everyday life for healing.  The most important part of this process is to have a consultation with the Doctor or Doctors that you feel you’d be most comfortable with.  Read our tips below to learn more about how to manage the process and gain your confidence about your plastic surgery decisions during your consultation.

#1. Expect to pay a fee for the consultation

A lot of people have questions about surgery and the consultation is meant for this.  But let’s face the facts, professionals should not be expected to give free advice.  You wouldn’t expect a dermatologist to tell you how to treat your skin for free, or a therapist to help you through your struggles for free.  Professionals spend years of their life learning their trade, so expect to pay for their knowledge and experience.  Your willingness to pay the consultation fee lets the Doctor know that you are committed to your interest in surgery.

#2. Bring a loved one for support

There are a lot of people who may want to be involved in your surgical experience or have questions of their own. We suggest you bring ONE loved one with you to your consultation.  Either your spouse, parent, sibling, friend..whomever you are most comfortable with.  It will help you to feel a bit more relaxed, and they may have some questions to ask that you might not have thought of!

#3. Bring a list of questions written down to ask your Plastic Surgeon

This step is so important!  Often times people come for a consultation and forget questions they would have liked to ask.  If you bring a list with your questions written down, then you will get all the answers to your questions and it ensures you won’t forget! You can also refer back to this list with your answers written down in the future if you would like.

#4. Determine if you will need financing options beforehand

Financing is a great way to match your surgical goals with everyday life.  Determining if this is necessary before your consultation is very helpful, and will aid in the flow and ease of your consultation.  If you would like to book surgery ASAP, and need financing, you can apply before your consultation.  Knowing how much you have been approved for beforehand will help us to move the process along and get your surgery booked as soon as possible!

#5. Do your research from credible websites and organizations

This is CRUCIAL to setting your expectations and your understanding of the surgical process.  Credible websites and organizations will provide you with information that is accurate, relevant and detailed.  We recommend the following websites and organizations as places for you to read up on for more information:

#6. Be honest

Being honest during your consultation is the only way to ensure that you and the Doctor are on the same page with realistic expectations and goals. Be forthcoming with your medical history, personal information and expectations so that there are no misunderstandings.

We hope these tips are helpful for you! Remember, the goal is always to provide you with the highest level of care and bring you closer to your desired image.  Call us at 985.223.2602 to guarantee your spot in our schedule for a consultation with your new found consultation confidence!
