Buttocks reshaping, sometimes called buttocks augmentation, gluteoplasty, or the Brazilian Butt Lift, refers to surgical procedures designed to alter the shape of the buttock area. This procedure is becoming increasingly popular in the United States. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 3,750 buttock augmentation and reshaping procedures were performed in 2012.
BUTTOCK AUGMENTATION OPTIONS
Brazilian Butt Lift
The most common method to alter the size and shape of the buttocks is called autologous fat transfer, more popularly known as the “Brazilian Butt Lift,” which utilizes fat from one or more areas of the patient’s body and transfers it to the buttocks for augmentation. This procedure is limited by the amount of fat that can be transferred from other parts of the body and by the amount of fat that survives the transfer procedure.
Another method of altering the size and shape of the buttocks is the use of implants, which are made of solid silicone and placed under the gluteal muscles. Buttock implants may be the only option for patients who do not have enough body fat to use for augmentation. Gluteal implants tend to have a relatively high surgical complication rate, so I do not perform this procedure in my practice.
The buttock lift is used for patients who have sagging tissue in the lower buttock or a poorly defined inferior gluteal fold. This surgical procedure is designed to create a more aesthetically pleasing fold by removing the excess skin in the lower buttock and lifting the upper thigh area below the fold. The patient must understand that this approach results in a permanent scar along the newly created fold. In addition, liposuction may be used to contour the hips, outer thighs, and lower back to accentuate particular areas of the buttocks.
Every patient has a unique physical anatomy and their own idea of what they want to accomplish with the butt augmentation procedure. Some patients request a more rounded buttock shape, while others desire better definition in the lower fold of the buttock. As such, it is my goal to work together with the patient to decide the best technique while taking all the necessary factors into account. My approach will depend on the patient’s physical anatomy, health history, desires for the procedure, and other factors that will be addressed during the initial consultation.
A disadvantage of transferring fat to the buttocks is that some of the fat may be reabsorbed into the body. A surgeon cannot predict how much fat will be reabsorbed, but once about three months have passed, the fat that remains is usually permanent. Other complications, although rare, include those that are commonly associated with liposuction: fluid collection, contour irregularities, and asymmetry.
OPERATION AND RECOVERY
During the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure, fat is harvested from areas of the body that have excess fat, such as the stomach, “love handles,” hips, or thighs. The fat is removed with a gentle type of liposuction that does not destroy the fat cells. The fat is then purified and reinjected into the muscle layers of the buttocks.
Most patients experience swelling after the procedure, which will subside. Patients typically do not feel much discomfort after this procedure and can return to work after about ten days. It is recommend that you wear a body garment for six to eight weeks to help the body conform to its new shape.
If the fat is prepared and placed properly, results with the Brazilian Butt Lift can last for as many as twenty years. Patients who do not smoke typically maintain results better than those who do. However, this procedure does not stop the natural signs of aging, so changes to the overall shape can occur over time. Any sharp increase or decrease in weight can also have an affect on the smoothness of the area.
