Fat Transfer for Contour Augmentation and Rejuvenation
Just get rid of fat, right? Well, not so fast…taking fat from one area of the body and then placing it into another area has become increasingly more common in recent years. It is known as a fat transfer or fat augmentation. I recently attended the International Fat Grafting Forum in New Orleans. It was opportunity to review present fat transfer techniques and innovative ideas using fat. The most common use of fat transfer is for buttock augmentation. But I believe the most powerful use of fat transfer is in combination with other procedures. A face lift alone simply cannot restore youthful facial volumes. A fat transfer allows specific areas to be filled in order to balance the surgical result. For patients having breast lifts or augmentations, fat transfer will provide the ability to enhance the breast contours or even correct anatomical issues not addressed by surgery. Fat transfer is certainly an exciting frontier for plastic surgeons; and I look forward to providing safe and reliable options for patients interested in these procedures.
Why use fat?
- Versatility: It can be placed just about anywhere in the body. When it is placed in various areas of the face, for example, a more youthful appearance can be achieved. You can even get a more shapely butt by placing fat over the gluteal muscles to enhance its contour.
- 2-for-1: As the surgeon removes the fat for transfer, the contour can be improved in that area. At least those “saddle bags” can be good for something!
- Lasting results: Fat has the capability of producing natural and potentially permanent results.
So it looks like fat is here to stay. Entertainment stars like Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, and Nikki Minaj have highlighted their body contours and are probably responsible for the increase in the number of women seeking butt augmentations using fat transfer. Recently released surgical statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons showed a 200% increase between 2013 and 2014 in the number of patients having augmentation of the buttocks using fat transfer. More importantly, recent advancements and refined techniques in the fat transfer procedure have increased the number of candidates for this procedure.
