Transferring Your Own Fat to Rejuvenate and Contour Your Body
When considering cosmetic surgery to address issues having to do with body fat, the natural inclination is simply to have it removed. Recently, though, transferring fat from one part of the body to another has become all the rage. I recently had the chance to review fat transfer methods and techniques at the International Fat Grafting Forum in New Orleans, which is not far from my practice in Houma. This cosmetic technique is particularly popular when it comes to women using it to augment their buttocks.
As a plastic surgeon, I believe fat transfers most powerful application is when it’s used in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures. Take face lifts as just one example. This procedure alone does not fully restore youthful appearance because the volume you had when you were younger is still missing. A fat augmentation by transferring fat from one area of the body to certain areas of the face can enhance a face lift and boost its rejuvenating effects. A similar effect can be achieved when using it in conjunction with a breast augmentation or breast lift. I look forward to providing safe options for reliably delivering better results across a range of cosmetic procedures thanks to the exciting new frontier of fat transfer.
The Benefits of Using Fat
- You get two benefits for the price of one. Most of us typically already have some extra fat on us somewhere, or we might not be needing the services of a plastic surgeon. By removing it from one area, I can increase the contour and definition there while achieving the same result in another spot where it’s transferred to.
- Fat is very versatile. It is able to be placed just about anywhere around the body. When placed in the face, it is particularly good at rejuvenating appearance, and its use in the buttocks can give you the shapely, contoured butt you’ve always wanted.
- It offers lasting results. Transferring fat on its own or to augment other cosmetic procedures can deliver potentially permanent results, which translates into excellent bang for your buck.
Fat transfer appears to be a procedure that isn’t going away any time soon. In fact, statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show a 200 percent increase in the use of this procedure in butt augmentations from 2013 to 2014. There’s no doubt pop culture is a major contributor to this with stars such as Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Nikki Minaj having highlighted their body contours and inspiring other women to follow suit. Additionally, this cosmetic technique continues to undergo the same types of improvements and refinements that are typical of other cosmetic procedures, which means greater numbers of people are now candidates for it.
